A short intro sequence vaguely (but enticingly) introduces your ancient underground surroundings, and it’s immediately clear that you’ll need to grow some crops to fend off your appetite, build a base to craft battle-ready gear, and search for three boss creatures. So I'm surprised how comfortable it is being perpetually underground in Core Keeper. Part of it is the charming art and animation, along with the dynamic lighting effects. The game begins in the gloom of the Core chamber, but place a few torches and clear out some dirt walls with a pickaxe, and soon the room is bathed in warm light.

This is done by activating all three boss statues connected to it. Each is associated with one of the first three bosses. Defeating that boss will drop an essence necessary to activate their statue:
